Annual deaths in the UK have risen sharply In the last 50 years, the consequences of asbestos exposure have been mainly due to their existence asbestos extensive industrial use during 1950-1980.
Latest information shows:
⚬ There are 2,595 deaths of mesothelioma in the UK in 2016, generally similar to the previous four year.
⚬ The latest projections show that there will be around 2,500 deaths per year for the rest the current decade before the annual rate starts to decline.
⚬ The annual increase in mesothelioma mortality rates in recent years has been driven primarily by death among those aged 70 years and over.
⚬ In 2016 there were 2,197 male deaths and 398 female deaths, which are generally similar to annual figures between men and women in the previous four years.
⚬ There are 2,170 new cases of mesothelioma assessed for Industrial Disability Disability (IIDB) in 2016, 240 were women, compared to 2,130 in 2015 with 220 women.
⚬ Men who work in the building industry when asbestos is widely used are now among them most at risk of developing mesothelioma.
