Malignant Mesothelioma: ITS NOT A RARE CASE ANYMORE !
Malignant mesothelioma is an uncommon, but today its not classified to be rare anymore, this cancer is difficult to diagnose and less responsive to therapy. Malignant mesothelioma is the most serious of all diseases related to asbestos.
A special cell layer called mesothelial cells lining the chest cavity, abdominal cavity, and cavity around the heart. These cells also cover the outer surface of most internal organs. The tissue formed by these cells is called mesothelium.

Mesothelium helps protect organs by producing special lubricating fluids that allow moving organs. For example, this fluid makes it easier for the lungs to move inside the chest while breathing. The chest mesothelium is called the pleura and the stomach mesothelium is known as the peritoneum. The mesothelium from the pericardial cavity (space "sac like" around the heart) is called the pericardium
Mesothelium tumors can be benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancer). Malignant mesothelium tumors are called malignant mesothelioma. Because most mesothelial tumors are cancerous, malignant mesothelioma is often only called mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is recognized as a tumor of the pleura, peritoneum, and pericardium in the late 1700s. But not long after, in 1960, this particular type of tumor was described in more detail and even more importantly, its connection with asbestos exposure was recognized. The first report linking mesothelioma with asbestos exposure was written by J.C. Wagner, and described 32 cases of workers in "Asbestos Hills" in South Africa. Since the relationship between mesothelioma and asbestos exposure has been confirmed in studies worldwide.
The incidence of mesothelioma in the United States is still very low, with 14 cases occurring per million people per year. Although these figures tripled mesothelioma in men between 1970 and 1984, they were directly related to environmental exposure and work for asbestos, especially in the fields of asbestos products and shipbuilding facilities.
Although this disease is more commonly seen in men aged 60 years, it has been described in women and early childhood as well. The cause of this disease is not well understood in the last two groups, but there is some evidence of possible asbestos exposure in some of these cases as well.
Mesothelioma is a deadly disease known to man; the average life span of people generated from diagnosis to death less than 24 months. This is a disease that attacks about 3,000 Americans every year; hard workers who have worked for life to meet the needs of their families, do the work that keeps the country going and a good place to live. They work in factories, in shipyards, in mining, for the US military, as engineers, as pipefitters, as steel workers, as auto mechanics, and in many other professions. They returned to the homes of their exhausted loved ones covered with dust and dust; tired, but satisfied that they have jobs and provide for their families. Content that they put food on the table and a house on the head of their loved ones. Content that they work to make a better life for their families in this generation and then ...
But what they don't know is that when they work very hard, they not only slowly kill themselves, but those who work very hard to help; their family, their loved ones.
What is mesothelium?
Mesothelium is a membrane that covers and protects most of the body's internal organs. It consists of two layers of cells: one layer immediately surrounds the organ; others form pockets around it. The mesothelium produces lubricating fluids that are released between these layers, allowing moving organs (such as the heart to beat and the lungs to expand and contract) to glide easily against adjacent structures.
Mesothelium has a different name, depending on its location in the body. The peritoneum is a mesothelial tissue that covers most of the organs in the abdominal cavity. The pleura is the membrane that surrounds the lungs and coats the chest wall. The pericardium covers and protects the heart. Mesothelial tissue that surrounds the internal male reproductive organs is called the tunica vaginalis testis. Tunica serosa uteri covers the internal reproductive organs in women
What is my diagnosis?
There are three types of mesothelioma.
Pleural mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs (pleura)
peritoneal mesothelioma is cancer of the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum)
pericardial mesothelioma is cancer of the lining around the heart (pericardium).
The sub-type (or cell type) of mesothelioma is epithelioid (the most common, and is considered most suitable for treatment), sarcomatosa (a much more aggressive form), and biphasic or mixed (a combination of the two other cell types).
The structural appearance of cells under a microscope determines the cell or sub-type of mesothelioma. Epithelioid is the least aggressive; sarcomatoid, the most aggressive. Biphasic or mixed cell types show structural elements of both.
